Low Sperm Count Treatment

A low sperm count reduces the odds of conceiving, but many men with a low count still go on to father children. We help you improve sperm count and quality naturally.

What is a low sperm count?

Low sperm count means the semen you ejaculate contains fewer sperm than normal. It is also called oligospermia; a complete absence of sperm is called azoospermia. Your count is considered low if you have fewer than 15 million sperm per millilitre of semen.

The main sign of low sperm count is difficulty conceiving. There may be no other obvious symptoms, although an underlying problem – an inherited chromosomal abnormality, hormonal imbalance, dilated testicular veins or a blockage – can cause signs.

Symptoms that can accompany low sperm count

Low sperm count symptoms might include:

  • Problems with sexual function – low sex drive or difficulty maintaining an erection
  • Pain, swelling or a lump in the testicle area
  • Decreased facial or body hair, or other signs of a hormone abnormality
  • Watery or thin semen

FAQ

Low Sperm Count questions

Straight answers to the questions men ask us most.

Which foods improve sperm count?

The best way to increase sperm count naturally is to eat more foods high in sperm-friendly nutrients such as vitamin C, zinc, antioxidants and polyunsaturated fats – citrus, leafy greens, nuts, seeds, oily fish and eggs.

Is healthy sperm thick or runny?

Normally semen is a thick, whitish liquid. Watery semen can be a sign of low sperm count and possible fertility problems, although several conditions can change the colour and consistency of semen.

Can a low sperm count be treated?

Yes. Depending on the cause, sperm count and quality can often be improved through natural treatment, correcting nutrient deficiencies and lifestyle changes such as reducing alcohol, quitting smoking and managing weight and stress.

How long does it take to improve sperm count?

Sperm take roughly 2–3 months to develop, so most men see measurable improvement after about three months of consistent treatment.
