Erectile Dysfunction Treatment

Struggling to get or keep an erection is far more common than most men admit – and it is treatable. Men's Clinic South Africa uncovers the cause and treats it with natural options, 100% confidentially.

What is erectile dysfunction?

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is the inability to develop or maintain an erection firm enough for satisfying sexual intercourse. If you cannot get a strong, reliable erection at least half of the time, you may be experiencing ED.

Your erection is closely tied to your overall health. A failing erection can be an early warning sign of a more serious condition such as diabetes, high blood pressure or heart disease, which is why we always look for the underlying cause rather than only treating the symptom.

What causes ED?

Erectile dysfunction is often linked to a specific medical condition or a combination of factors, including:

  • Diabetes
  • Heart conditions and clogged blood vessels
  • High blood pressure (hypertension)
  • Obesity and metabolic syndrome
  • Ageing and low testosterone
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Stress, anxiety and depression
  • Medication-induced ED
  • Alcohol, tobacco and substance use
  • Damage to pelvic organs or nerves
  • Peyronie's disease (scar tissue inside the penis)

Lifestyle factors and ED

There is a clear link between lifestyle and erectile function. Things that are unhealthy for the body in general tend to also inhibit the body's ability to get and maintain an erection:

  • Being overweight
  • Poor diet and little or no exercise
  • Inadequate sleep
  • High-pressure work and chronic stress
  • Relationship difficulties

FAQ

Erectile Dysfunction questions

Straight answers to the questions men ask us most.

How is ED diagnosed?

If you cannot gain an erection strong enough for penetration at least 50% of the time, you should be screened for erectile dysfunction. ED is primarily diagnosed through a comprehensive medical and sexual history. Additional tests may be needed when ED is secondary to another condition or chronic illness.

Are erectile dysfunction and impotence the same thing?

The terms are generally used to mean the same thing. Impotence is more often used for a more serious case of ED, where a man cannot get an erection at all.

What are the erectile dysfunction treatment options?

Effective treatment always begins with uncovering the underlying cause. Men's Clinic South Africa starts with a confidential consultation to establish a baseline and identify anything more serious that may be causing your ED. We then recommend a natural, herbal treatment matched to your body and circumstances, and adjust it as you progress. Many men are able to reduce their treatment over time.

What are the side effects of ED treatment?

Prescription ED medications can cause headaches, facial flushing and upset stomach, especially at higher doses. Our treatments are made from natural ingredients, with no injections and no surgery – but natural does not mean suitable for everyone, so discuss any medication or condition with us first. If you ever experience symptoms that concern you, seek medical help immediately.

What causes erectile dysfunction?

ED is often a symptom of an underlying condition. It can result from a problem with the brain, hormones, emotions, nerves, muscles or blood vessels. Common causes include heart disease, atherosclerosis, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, low testosterone, Peyronie's disease, certain medications, tobacco use, alcohol or substance abuse, prostate treatment, and injuries.

Is the consultation confidential?

Yes. Every consultation – by phone, WhatsApp or in person at our Sandton clinic – is 100% private and confidential.

Results vary from person to person. This information is not a substitute for medical advice.
